Fire alarm horn strobes, strobes and notification appliances
Notification appliances are the devices that tell occupants to leave the building, and this is the deepest line on the site. It covers combination horn strobes, strobe-only appliances, horns, mini horns, chimes, alarm bells, speakers and speaker strobes, low frequency sounder and sounder strobe versions, and addressable sounder bases. Almost every model comes in wall and ceiling versions, indoor and outdoor or weatherproof housings, red and white finishes, and FIRE, ALERT, EVAC, AGENT, FUEGO or unmarked lettering, with bulk packs for large rough-ins.
Selection follows the panel first and the coverage calculation second. Confirm whether the notification appliance circuit is two-wire or four-wire and that the appliance is listed compatible with the panel or booster driving it. Then work the coverage: strobe candela comes from the room dimensions and mounting height in the spacing tables, and the value on the approved drawings is what gets inspected, so order what the design calls for rather than a convenient equivalent. Field-selectable candela appliances give some room during rough-in. Total the current draw of every appliance on the circuit at its actual setting and check it against the circuit rating and the voltage drop over the run.
